Lenovo Ideapad 300 15.6″ Review

Lenovo Ideapad 300 15.6″ Review

Lenovo is back with another Ideapad, and it’s an interesting model. The laptop, at its lowest configuration, is very budget-friendly, but you don’t necessarily have to make big compromises to hit that low price point. The 15.6-inch glossy display makes for a large overall laptop, one that presents its bulk well. How does the laptop hold up in everyday life, and will it meet your needs? Read our review to find out!

Hardware

The Lenovo Ideapad 300 is a budget-friendly laptop for those more concerned about functionality than portability. Yes, Lenovo has many lightweight, portable Ideapads -- this isn't one of them, but that's not a bad thing. The Ideapad 300 offers some features you'd be hard-pressed to find on a competing model, such as a VGA-out port for use with the older monitor you may have sitting around and an optical drive. As well, it has a dedicated number pad and a generously-spaced keyboard...you feel like you have a bit of room to spread out, if you will.
2
The laptop's lid is smooth -- silver colored, in our case, but also available in black and red -- with a low-contrast Lenovo logo in one corner. The bottom of the laptop contrasts the lid with a dark, textured body panel; there are four rubber feet in each corner, as well as vents and speaker grilles. The edges, meanwhile, are angular and dark with a noticeable lip on the front edge.
The ports are fairly extensive and inline with the wants of the laptop’s main audience — the right side has a VGA port, a 4-in-1 card reader, one USB port, and an HDMI port, while the left side has an optical disc drive and two USB ports.
5
The internal design is pleasant, if not excessively plastic-y. The bezel around the display is smooth plastic, whereas the plastic around the keyboard is slightly textured with a cross-hatched pattern, and is the same color as the lid. The keyboard is low-profile and dark; the keys require a pleasant amount of force to press and don't feel loose. The trackpad, meanwhile, is about as wide as the spacebar and has two physical buttons; it works as it should, and you can't ask for much more than that.

    Lenovo Y700 (15-inch) Review

    Design: Cruise Control

Lenovo seems to love cruising in that understated-chic lane -- at least when it comes to its gaming/entertainment laptops. The line of notebooks has been rebranded yet again, but not much has changed from last year's Y50, other than a capital "L" on the Lenovo logo on the lid and the black-and-red grille being more prominently placed in the rear.

The lid is still constructed from a black aluminum subtly brushed to create a cross-hatch pattern.
Most of the keyboard deck is covered in a black, soft-touch finish. The top portion of the deck features the two thick aluminum speaker grilles on either side of the hinge, which is made from a glossy black plastic. It's not an offensive look by any means, but with so many laptops rocking the black-and-red motif, it's definitely a bit tired. The Y700 also picks up fingerprint smudges more quickly than I'd like.

    Weighing 5.7 pounds, the 15.2 x 10.9 x 1-inch Y700 is slightly lighter than the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series (5.9 pounds, 15.1 x 10.4 x 1 inches). However, this machine is a lightweight compared to the Alienware 15's 6.6-pound, 15.2 x 10.6 x 1.34-inch frame.

    Display

I love it when a PC maker listens! After we dinged last generation's Y Series notebooks for their lackluster displays, Lenovo stepped up its game and added some much-needed brightness. The Y700's 15-inch 1920 x 1080 panel averaged 263 nits on our light meter, beating the 244-nit mainstream average. It was still no match for the Alienware 15, which hit a dazzling 311 nits, but the Inspiron 15-7000 produced a measly 222 nits.
This brightness definitely helped when I watched the 1080p trailer for The Hateful Eight on this screen. I could see the little grime-caked creases on actor Samuel L. Jackson's formerly white gloves. His blood-red tie drew my eye, allowing me to take in his bronze complexion. However, I did notice some yellowing, particularly on white objects.
Despite the yellow tint in the movie trailer, the sky in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was nice and blue. Snake's face was covered in a mask of red gore, with the dried blood nestling into the deep crevasses of his face.
The Y700 also did well on Delta-E, which measures color accuracy -- it scored 0.7 (0 is the ideal), soundly trouncing the Alienware 15's 1.3 and the Dell's 4.1. It isn't all sunshine and rainbows on the display front, however. The Y700 produced just 60.8 percent of the sRGB color gamut -- far less than the ideal 100 percent. The Inspiron 15-7000 performed marginally better, at 70 percent, while the Alienware was close to perfect, at 98 percent.
The touch screen responded quickly to my swipes and taps, allowing me to swiftly zoom in or out or close a program.

    Audio

Lenovo's collaboration with JBL continues to pay off. Outfitted with a pair of JBL speakers and a bottom-mounted subwoofer, the Y700 pumps out loud, balanced audio. The laptop is also outfitted with Dolby software, which has been built into Lenovo's new Settings menu, where you can access five audio settings: Dynamic, Music, Movie, Gaming and Voice. (For the purposes of this review, I used Dynamic as my default setting.)
Psy's latest earworm, "Daddy," was a cacophony of synthesized instruments and throbbing bass, producing a generous soundscape at 60 percent volume. However, pleasant quickly transformed to a blaring mess at maximum volume when I listened to Jamiroquai's "Corner of the Earth." The sitar and the accompanying strings were tinny and distorted. It was tolerable when it was just Jay Kay's vocal and an acoustic guitar, but just barely.
The speakers did an excellent job of conveying the most minute audio details during gameplay. When I played Metal Gear Solid V, Snake's clothes scraped loudly across the sandy surface as he crawled toward the enemy encampment. Rising from a prostrate position into a crouch, he moved closer to the crackling fire, raising his pistol. I heard a soft puff of air and an audible groan as the guard collapsed into an unconscious heap from the tranquilizer dart.

    Gaming

The Y700 gets its gaming cred from its Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 GPU with 4GB of VRAM. That means you'll be able to play most of the hottest games, just not at the highest settings.
Slinking across the desert floor at 38 fps on Very High in MGSV, I had time to notice the striations in the cliff above with its myriad cracks. I discovered a small wolf cub on the way to the enemy base and spent some time oohing and ahhing over how well the individual hairs were rendered. When I dropped the settings to High, the frame rate rose to 61 fps, and on Medium settings, it played at 72 fps.
The laptop's frame rate hit 77 fps on the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege benchmark on Low settings at 1080p. On the highest settings, the frame rate fell to 40 fps, which is above our 30-fps playability threshold.
The notebook continued to hold its own during Metro: Last Light, a notoriously taxing game with benchmarks to match. On Low at 1080p, the Y700 delivered 76 fps, smoking the Alienware 15 (64 fps) and the Inspiron 15-7000 (58 fps), as well as the 68-fps mainstream average. As I expected, the Y700's frame rate dropped to an unplayable 17 fps at Maximum settings, matching the Inspiron 15-7000 but falling short of the 22-fps category average.
For those moments when you're not saving the world or rebuilding it, the Y700 switches over to its integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU.

    Performance

Outfitted with a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700 CPU with 16GB of RAM, the Y700 is more than just fun and games. The laptop streamed an episode of Master of None without incident despite running a full system scan with 12 open tabs in Google Chrome.
The notebook continued to exhibit its dominance on Geekbench 3 (a synthetic overall performance test), where it scored 13,067. That was more than enough to spank the 8,563 mainstream average. The Inspiron 15-7000 (2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6300HQ) and the Alienware 15 (2.9 GHz Intel Core i5-4210 CPU) hit 8,800 and 6,321, respectively.
The Y700's 128GB SSD, which co-exists with a 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drive, produced 108.3 MBps on our File Transfer Test. The Alienware 15 (1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drive and 128GB m.2 SSD) was a close second with 101.9 MBps, while the Inspiron 15-7000's 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drive produced a disappointing 34.6 MBps.
However, the Y700 performed well on the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro Test, matching 20,000 names and addresses in 3 minutes and 38 seconds. That's much faster than the 5:33 average, as well as the Alienware 15 (4:14) and the Inspiron 15-7000 (3:58).

    Heat

During more ordinary tasks, such as streaming a full-screen Hulu video for 15 minutes, the Y700 stayed fairly cool. The touchpad registered 75 degrees Fahrenheit, while the space between the G and H keys measured 88 degrees. The notebook's bottom hit 92 degrees, which is below our 95-degree comfort threshold.
Fifteen minutes after making my way toward the mission objective in MGSV, the touchpad rose to 79 degrees. The space between the G and H keys jumped to 101 degrees, while the undercarriage measured a hot 103 degrees. Both temperatures are above our 95-degree comfort threshold.

    Keyboard and Touchpad

Similar to its predecessors, the Y700 features a full-size island-style keyboard with a full number pad. The keys have that smilelike shape popular on the company's Ideapad line of laptops. The W, A, S and D keys, central to PC-game movement, are lined in a much brighter red than their compatriot keys, making them easier to find. However, with the backlighting on, the keys only look marginally different from the others.
I hit my usual 60 words per minute on the 10 Fast Fingers typing test, with my fingers bouncing along on the large keys. The key travel and actuation hit acceptable but unimpressive levels, at 1.5 mm and 50 grams, respectively, but the feedback felt spongy compared to the firm bounce I'm used to from Lenovo systems. I'm also not fond of the undersize right Shift key, which could cause problems in games that map it to specific actions.
The 4.1 x 2.7-inch Synaptics touchpad is massive, affording plenty of room to perform a wide range of gestures, such as pinch to zoom, two-finger rotate or three-finger tap to summon Cortana. The bottom corners of the pad delivered firm feedback with a satisfying click.
Beware of fan noise on the Y700. I could hear the quiet whirring whether I was taking head shots in Metal Gear Solid or typing up an email.

    Webcam

The Y700's 720p integrated webcam captures passable stills and images. My royal-blue dress came out turquoise in my test shots, while my skin looked ashy. Details were sharp enough to capture the general outline of my braided locks, but everything else was a grainy mess.

    Ports

The Y700 has enough ports to satisfy your mobile gaming needs. On the right, there are two USB 3.0 ports, a full HDMI port, an expanding Gigabit Ethernet port and a secure lock slot.
Along the left sits a USB 2.0 port, a 4-in-1 card reader, a combination headphone/microphone jack and Lenovo's proprietary DC adapter port.

    Battery Life

The Y700 lasted 4 hours and 16 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which consists of continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi.
However, it wasn't enough to beat the Inspiron 15-7000's time of 6:45, the Alienware 15's 6:18 or the 5:40 mainstream average.

    Software and Warranty

Lenovo did its best to avoid loading the Y700 with bloatware, instead giving consumers some legitimately helpful apps and utilities. You get the updated Lenovo Companion, which gives you near rooter-to-tooter access to your laptop's diagnostics. I'm particularly fond of the new layout, which presents options such as Support and System Health as small icons on the side of the panel. The company's Settings menu also follows the same design scheme.
Additional Lenovo-branded software includes OneKey Recovery, which quickly backs up important files in case of a system crash. REACHit allows you to access all of your files across all of your devices, while SHAREit gives you the ability to share files without having to rely on a network. You'll also get Lenovo ID, which allows you to sign in to all of your Lenovo apps from one central location.
Hoping to provide extra value to gamers, the company has also added OnePlay Gaming, a subscription service where you can buy or rent games. Priced at $6.99 a month, the service boasts more than 1,000 titles spanning PC, Mac and Android games, that can be played across multiple devices. Lenovo is giving gamers a 90-day free trial to take the service for a spin.
Other third-party apps include Flipboard, Adobe Photoshop Express and Nvidia GeForce Experience, the latter of which offers a suite of utilities designed to optimize your gaming experience.
The Lenovo Y700 comes with a one-year warranty.

    Configurations

Our $1,099 review configuration of the Lenovo Y700 includes a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor with 16GB of RAM; a 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drive with a 128GB SSD; an Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU; and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU with 4GB of VRAM.
The $979 base model has a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-6300HQ CPU; 8GB of RAM; a 500GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive; an Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU; and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU with 2GB of VRAM.
Those with more disposable income to blow might want to take a look at the $1,599 version. That configuration has a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor; 12GB of RAM; a 1TB, 5,400-rpm hard drive with a 128GB SSD; an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU with 4GB of VRAM; and an external Blu-ray recorder. For $50 less, you get 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

    Bottom Line

The Lenovo Y700 is a solid choice for gamers looking for a mobile rig that won't put their wallet in traction. The improved display and longer battery life make this system a much better option than last year's disappointing Y50 series. The $1,099 laptop offers a somewhat subdued but attractive chassis, with a powerful Core i7 processor and a midlevel Nvidia graphics card. It's a recipe for great multimedia and gaming performance when combined with a bright display and impressive audio.
For $100 more than our review config ($220 more than the starting price), you could get the heavier $1,199 Alienware 15, which offers a gorgeous display, longer battery life and customizable lighting. But overall, the Y700 is a very good value.

    Lenovo IdeaPad 500 Review

    Design

White with silver accents, the Ideapad 500 stands out from the dour sea of black or silver notebooks. The keyboard deck has a solid feel, with no bending or creaking when I leaned against it. Even though the lid is white, it still picked up fingerprints after only a day of testing.
Measuring 0.97 inches thick and weighing 5.2 pounds, the Ideapad 500 is thicker and heavier than the Toshiba Satellite Radius 15 P55W (0.79 inches, 4.96 pounds), while being lighter and about as thick as the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (1 inch, 5.9 pounds). It's about as thick and just as heavy as the HP 15t Touch (0.96 inches, 5.2 pounds).
The Ideapad's VGA, Ethernet, HDMI and dual USB 3.0 ports sit on the machine's left side. On the notebook's right edge, you'll find its Kensington lock port, DVD-RW drive, SD memory reader, USB 2.0 port and headphone jack.

    Display

When I watched the 1080p trailer for Deadpool on the Ideapad 500's 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080-pixel display, I found the screen's colors washed out and muted, though details came through clearly. Deadpool's red costume didn't look as vibrant as it does on more accurate displays, but instead was rendered with a more purpleish tone.
The shadowy corners of a makeshift hospital lacked the inky, saturated tones seen on other displays, and the flames inside a burning warehouse were brighter and whiter than they were orange or yellow. Still, the display is of high enough resolution that I noticed minute details, like the worn-thin pattern on Deadpool's tights.
According to our measurements, the Ideapad's display produces 216 nits of brightness. That's brighter than the HP 15t Touch (162 nits) but dimmer than the Satellite Radius 15 (263 nits), the average mainstream notebook (249 nits) and the Inspiron 15 (222 nits). Making matters worse, the screen's colors started washing out when I moved more than 40 degrees to the left or right.
The Ideapad's display is also less color-accurate than those of its competitors, with a Delta-E score of 4.6 (a score of 0 is perfect). That may beat the average for mainstream notebook displays (5.7), but the Satellite Radius (0.8), HP 15t Touch (3.91) and Inspiron 15 (0.4) all fared better.
Unfortunately, the Ideapad 500's screen just can't show that many colors. According to our colorimeter, the panel renders only 61 percent of the sRGB color spectrum, less than the Inspiron 15 (70 percent) and far below both the Satellite Radius (109.6 percent) and the average mainstream laptop (84.4 percent). The HP 15t Touch (61.5 percent) displays a similarly narrow range of color.

    Audio

The Ideapad 500's powerful JBL speakers did a phenomenal job of blasting tunes, filling a large conference room with sound, but the notebook's default sound settings are not optimal. Both the live performance of "Under Pressure," by Queen and David Bowie, and "I Move the Base," by Future, sounded muffled and muddied when the Dolby Home Theater app had its default Music setting enabled. When I changed the preset to Dynamic, Future's bass was strong, David Bowie's voice was clear and powerful, and the dialogue in the Deadpool trailer came out clearer.

    Keyboard and Touchpad

Thanks to the Ideapad 500's bouncy, responsive keys, I cranked out 69 words per minute with 97 percent accuracy on the 10FastFingers.com typing test, which is close to my average rates (69 wpm with 99 percent accuracy).
The Ideapad's keys have a solid 1.65 millimeters of travel and require a strong 62 grams of force to actuate. We hope to find between 1.5 and 2mm of travel in notebook keyboards.
The Ideapad's touchpad is a speedy and accurate joy to use. As I traced my finger around the touchpad in fast and wild movements, it kept pace with my gestures. The touchpad also accurately registered two-finger gestures, including scrolling, pinching and zooming.

    RealSense Webcam

The camera inside the Ideapad features Intel's RealSense 3D technology, though the notebook did not come with any compatible applications. To test this feature out, I had to find the RealSense app store, and discover programs there.
I chose 3DMe, which takes a number of photos of your face from different angles, and then maps your face onto a digital statue.
The results looked OK, if not a bit close to the uncanny valley, and it failed to capture my hair, instead fitting a digital wig to my virtual skull.
I also tested out the Personify app, which removes your background from your webcam recordings. Personify didn't do a perfect job of facial recognition, lopping off parts of my hair and glasses at times, but it did remove the office wall behind me.
When used as a traditional webcam, the Ideapad's 2MP camera captured noisy, yet color-accurate photos where the purple of my dress shirt and the red of the Purch Media wall looked true to life.

    Heat

Throughout my testing, the Ideapad's chassis stayed cool to the touch. After I streamed full-screen HD video from Hulu, the touchpad measured 82.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The space between the G and H keys registered 81.5 degrees, and we recorded a temperature of 86 degrees on the notebook's underside. All measurements are below our 95-degree threshold for comfort.

    Performance

Powered by a 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor with 8GB of RAM and AMD Radeon R7 discrete graphics, the Ideapad doesn't beat all of its competitors, but it has enough muscle for serious multitasking and casual gaming.
I experienced zero lag or stutter while I split my screen between Google Chrome (with 12 tabs open), the processor-intensive racing game Asphalt 8 and the note-taking app Google Keep.
On GeekBench 3, which measures overall performance, the Ideapad scored 6,128, which beats the Core i3-4005U-powered HP 15t Touch (3,420) and Core i5-5200U-powered Satellite Radius (5,489). However, that score is below those of the Core i5-6300HQ-powered Inspiron 15 (8,800) and average mainstream laptop (8,936).
We measure a hard drive's speed by timing how fast it can duplicate 4.97GB of multimedia files, and the Ideapad's 1TB, 5,400rpm hard drive completed this task in 2 minutes and 42 seconds, for a rate of 31.42MBps. That's faster than the 750GB, 5,400rpm drive in the 15t Touch (25.6MBps), but slower than the 1TB, 5,400rpm hard drive in the Inspiron 15 (34.62MBps) and the 750GB, 5,400rpm hard drive in the Satellite Radius (39.15 MBps).
The Ideapad also achieved a middle-of-the-pack result in the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro test, where it matched 20,000 names and addresses in 4 minutes and 4 seconds. That time is shorter than those of the HP 15t Touch (7:59), Satellite Radius (5:42) and average notebook (5:20), but slightly longer than the Inspiron 15's time (3:58).

    Graphics

With the power of an AMD Radeon R7 graphics chip, the Ideapad 500 is good for casual-to-regular gamers. The notebook notched a score of 76,761 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited gaming benchmark, which is greater than the average notebook (73,478), HP 15t Touch (31,921) and the Satellite Radius (55,355). The Inspiron 15 7000 (105,046) earned a higher score.
When I played the Asphalt 8 racing title on the Ideapad, the game ran smoothly and without stutter, but it couldn't come close to our 30 frames per second threshold for BioShock: Infinite (11.9 fps at 1080p and Low graphics) or Metro: Last Light (15 fps at 1080p and Low graphics). The Inspiron 15 7000, which has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU, ran Bioshock (88 fps) and Metro: Last Light (58 fps) at playable speeds at the same settings.

    Battery Life

Don't expect to carry the Ideapad 500 too far from an outlet. On the Laptop Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits, Lenovo's laptop lasted a mere 3 hours and 43 minutes. That's a shorter than the Inspiron 15 (6:45), HP 15t Touch (5:24), Satellite Radius (5:14) and average laptop (5:50). If you turn the brightness up all the way or play games rather than just surf the Web on the Ideapad 500, expect its time to be much lower.

    Software and Warranty

The Ideapad's preloaded software includes the proprietary Lenovo Companion app for system maintenance, updates and support; OneKey Recovery for system backup management; and the ReachIt Bring-Your-Own-Cloud file-organization app. The company also included its own Settings app, which wrangles in a commonly used group of option toggles from Windows 10's settings. SHAREit lets you transfer files between your Ideapad and smartphones running iOS, Android or Windows Phone.
Lenovo includes a one-year warranty with 24/7 phone support and free parts and labor for mail-in repairs.

    Configuration Options

The entry-level, black $450 Ideapad 500 has a 2.3-GHz 6th Generation Intel Core i3-6100U processor, integrated Intel HD graphics, 6GB of RAM and a 5400rpm 500GB hard drive. If you want more performance, Lenovo sells that same Ideapad with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-6200U processor for either $550 (white) or $600 (black).
An $800 model of the Ideapad 5000 has a 2.5-GHz 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 8GB of RAM, integrated Intel HD graphics and a 5400rpm 1TB hard drive. The model we reviewed costs $900 and has a 2.5GHz 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 8GB of RAM, an Intel RealSense Camera, an AMD Radeon R7 graphics card with 2GB of memory and a 5400rpm 1TB hard drive.

    Bottom Line

The Lenovo Ideapad 500 has enough performance for solid multitasking; a great, responsive keyboard to enable your productivity; and Intel RealSense, which offers a few interesting capabilities now, with more possible in the future.
While its display and hard drive speeds aren't ideal, the Ideapad 500's biggest drawback is its short battery life, which detracts from the machine's portability.
